KM#5a marks the transition from the original cupro-nickel 20 toea to nickel plated steel, a cost-driven reformulation that the Bank of Papua New Guinea implemented in the early 2000s as global nickel prices climbed sharply. Papua New Guinea adopted the toea at independence in 1975, with the denomination structure deliberately designed around local marine currency traditions — the word "toea" itself derives from a shell ornament historically used in trade among coastal communities of the Motu people.
