Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG produced these test notes for use in calibrating and validating their currency-handling machines — ATMs, sorting equipment, and banknote processors — rather than for any financial purpose. The notes simulate the physical properties of genuine currency closely enough to trigger sensors without entering any monetary system. Siemens Nixdorf itself emerged from the 1990 merger of Siemens's data systems division with the troubled Nixdorf Computer AG, and banknote-processing equipment was a significant part of the combined portfolio.
Collector interest is driven almost entirely by scarcity: most test notes were destroyed after internal use, and few escaped into private hands through legitimate channels.
