Amsterdam struck this coin just four years after the city's dramatic switch of allegiance from Spain to the rebel States of Holland in 1578 — the event known as the Alteratie. The municipal government was effectively rebuilding its monetary apparatus from scratch, issuing silver under civic rather than provincial or royal authority during one of the most turbulent transitions in the city's political history.
Delmonte's classification places it among the scarcer civic issues of the Dutch Revolt period, when minting rights were contested, overlapping, and frequently improvised.
