Bulgaria's 1999 redenomination slashed 1,000 old leva from every price tag, making this 20 stotinki the equivalent of the old 200-leva coin — a denomination that had become nearly worthless during the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1996–97, when the lev lost roughly 90% of its value in under a year and the IMF imposed a currency board arrangement that pegged the lev to the Deutsche Mark.
