Somalia's first post-independence coinage program was developed with Italian technical assistance, and trial pieces like this were struck to evaluate planchet specifications and surface finishing before committing to production dies. Gold-plated trials of this type were rarely preserved through official channels — most were destroyed after approval or rejection of the design. Survivors reached collectors almost exclusively through mint workers or government officials.
