Somalia's elephant bullion series occupies an unusual niche: a sovereign-issued gold coin from a country that has functioned without a stable central government since 1991. The pieces are produced under licensing arrangements, with actual minting handled by overseas facilities — the Somali government's role is largely nominal, lending legal tender status to what is effectively a privately marketed product.
