The 1996 Somaliland shilling series, of which this is part, was issued by a government recognized by virtually no one. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, yet has remained outside the UN system ever since. Printing its own currency was a practical assertion of statehood — the notes circulated domestically despite having no international standing.
The "Bronze Commemorative" designation refers to a metallic ink overprint applied to the standard paper issue, distinguishing it from the regular circulation version of Pick 10.
