Obverse description The brass-plated steel centre displays the Coat of Arms of Kenya, featuring a Maasai shield bearing a traditional pattern, flanked by two rampant lions as supporters, each holding a spear, with a cockerel perched atop the shield. A scroll beneath the supporters bears the national motto HARAMBEE, and the date 2018 appears in the field below the arms. The surrounding nickel-plated steel ring carries the bilingual legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA in the upper arc and JAMHURI YA KENYA in the lower arc, separated by raised dots.

Reverse description The brass-plated steel centre depicts a detailed high-relief portrait of an African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) with its head lowered and facing right, its trunk curling downward, rendered in a naturalistic style that emphasises the texture of the hide and tusks. The numeral 20 appears prominently to the right of the elephant's head, with the country name KENYA inscribed below it in the field. The outer nickel-plated steel ring bears the English legend TWENTY SHILLINGS in the upper arc and the Swahili equivalent SHILINGI ISHIRINI in the lower arc, each separated from the other by raised dot stops.
