Baanka Somaliland issued this note shortly after the self-declared republic broke from the chaos of collapsed Somalia in 1991. The Somaliland shilling was introduced as a distinct currency to assert administrative separation from the south — at a time when no foreign government recognized Somaliland's independence, making the currency itself a kind of unilateral declaration backed by nothing but local consensus.

Pick 3 is among the earliest issues of a monetary system that had no IMF standing, no correspondent banking relationships, and no international legal footing. It circulated anyway.
