Uganda's 1973 series was introduced under Idi Amin's government, just two years after the military coup that deposed Milton Obote. The Bank of Uganda had only been established in 1966, so these early De La Rue issues were still building the institutional framework of a young central bank rather than replacing a long-standing currency tradition.
Thomas De La Rue printed the series at Grosvenor Gardens throughout this period for numerous African issuers simultaneously, and the production quality is consistent with their standard contract work of the early 1970s. The single watermark security feature reflects modest specification requirements from the issuing authority — later Ugandan issues would demand considerably more.
