The "Without islands" designation refers to a significant geographic omission on the map of Tanzania printed on this note — the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are absent, an error corrected in later printings of the same series. For a nation whose political union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964 was constitutionally foundational, the omission was not trivial.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement in Tanzanian currency production stretched back to independence-era issues, making this kind of plate error particularly noteworthy — quality control at De La Rue was generally rigorous.
