Samoa's 1974 proof series was produced to coincide with the country's growing presence in international numismatic markets — a deliberate revenue strategy adopted by many small Pacific nations during the early 1970s as collector demand for exotic commonwealth proofs peaked. These issues were struck in limited numbers for foreign collectors rather than domestic circulation, which is precisely why circulated examples are essentially nonexistent.
Tanumafili II held office as co-Head of State from 1962 and became sole Head of State after Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole's death in 1963, a position he retained until his own death in 2007 — the longest tenure of any Head of State in the world at that time.
