Tanumafili II held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — Head of State — from Samoan independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state in the Pacific. Unlike most constitutional monarchies, the office was held for life rather than inherited, with subsequent holders elected by the Legislative Assembly. This coin's production span of over two decades reflects the unusual political continuity of that arrangement.
