Brunei's coinage has remained unusually stable precisely because monetary policy answers ultimately to a single authority — the Sultan himself, who chairs the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam. The second portrait series, introduced in the early 1990s, replaced an earlier effigy deemed insufficiently formal for a sultan whose personal fortune was then regularly cited as among the largest in the world.
Copper-nickel was retained despite Brunei's oil wealth making a more precious composition entirely affordable — a deliberate choice to keep coinage practical rather than symbolic.
