Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim was the last Grand Master to rule Malta in fact as well as title. This coin was struck in the same year Napoleon's Egyptian expedition fleet stopped at Malta — ostensibly to take on water — and within days the Order had surrendered the island it had held since 1530. Hompesch negotiated the capitulation in June 1798, an act widely condemned as cowardice or outright treachery, and he was formally deposed by the Order's Russian knights before the year was out.
With the loss of Malta came the end of the Order's mint. This 20 Scudi is among the last gold issues struck under sovereign Hospitaller authority on the island.
