| Obverse description | Central oval shield bearing the arms of Schwyz — a plain field charged with a cross — set within an elaborate baroque cartouche with foliate and scroll ornamentation. The denomination '1/2 GL' appears in the exergue below the cartouche. The circular legend MONETA REIPUBLICAE SUITENSIS runs along the coin's periphery, interrupted at the base by the denomination. The overall design reflects the ornate late-18th-century Swiss cantonal coinage style. |

Schwyz — the canton that gave Switzerland its name — retained municipal coinage rights well into the late eighteenth century, a jurisdictional anomaly even by the fragmented standards of the Old Confederation. This 20 Schilling piece was struck just four years before the French Revolutionary Wars began dismantling the political arrangements that had made such local emissions possible. The Helvetic Republic, imposed in 1798, abolished cantonal monetary authority almost immediately.
