Krems an der Donau, the subject of this 1995 issue in Austria's "Cities of the Middle Ages" 20-Schilling series, received its municipal charter in 1305. The town sits at the eastern edge of the Wachau valley, a region whose wine trade funded much of its medieval prosperity. Austria retired the Schilling entirely in 2002 upon euro adoption, giving this series a fixed, finite run that ended abruptly rather than phasing out gradually.
