Bank Al-Maghrib's transition to brass-plated steel for its smaller fractional coinage was driven primarily by cost containment — solid brass blanks had become prohibitively expensive relative to the face values being struck. The plated steel construction also allows magnetic sorting, a practical advantage for modern coin-handling infrastructure Morocco has been expanding in its banking sector.
