Ali ibn Hamud al-Busaid was sultan for barely four years, abdicating in 1911 under sustained British pressure after a reign defined by colonial constraint rather than genuine authority. This 1908 nickel issue was struck in Birmingham at the Heaton Mint — one of only a handful of denominations produced for Zanzibar's truncated coinage system, which the British Protectorate had no particular interest in expanding.
The sant denominations saw limited circulation before British East African coinage absorbed most of the archipelago's everyday commerce.
