Pakistan and China designated 2015 as the "Year of Friendly Exchange" to coincide with the formal launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a roughly $46 billion infrastructure initiative announced during Xi Jinping's April 2015 visit to Islamabad. Commemorative coinage marking diplomatic milestones between the two countries has been issued periodically since the 1970s, when the relationship deepened partly in response to shared tensions with India and the Soviet Union.
