The ₹ symbol itself is the most useful dating anchor for this series. Designed by D. Udaya Kumar and adopted by the Government of India in July 2010, the symbol's first appearance on circulating banknotes came with exactly this series — making the 20-rupee note one of the earliest RBI issues to carry it. The sheer volume of signature and plate letter variants catalogued under P#103 reflects the note's long production run across two governor tenures, with Subbarao's name appearing on 2014-dated examples while Rajan's dominates the bulk of the run before Urjit Patel took over in September 2016.
The shift from equal-size to ascending-size serial numbers mid-run, and the presence or absence of the rectangular bar on the obverse, generate most of the sub-variety complexity here. The Patel ascending-size note without plate letter was erroneously catalogued separately as P-103o before correction.
