The Reserve Bank of India introduced the ₹20 denomination in its Mahatma Gandhi New Series in 2019, distinguished by its greenish-yellow color — a deliberate departure from the older series' orange-red palette to reduce confusion at point of transaction. The note incorporates an electrotype watermark and a windowed security thread inscribed with "Bharat" in Devanagari and "RBI" alternately.
Printed entirely by SPMCIL, this is a domestically produced series from start to finish — India having steadily reduced its historical reliance on foreign security printers over the preceding two decades.
