Thomas De La Rue has printed Sri Lankan rupee notes continuously since the Central Bank's founding in 1950, making this one of the longer uninterrupted printing relationships in Commonwealth currency history. The 20 rupee denomination sits at the low end of the circulating series and in practice sees heavy transactional use — De La Rue's paper stock for this series is known to wear relatively quickly under Sri Lankan humidity and handling conditions, which partly explains why the print run spans over a decade with minimal design revision rather than periodic reissues.
The watermark remains the primary security feature on what is otherwise a modestly secured note by current standards.
