Lawrence College in Ghora Gali, established in 1860 by the British to educate the sons of soldiers killed in the 1857 uprising, has operated nearly continuously through partition, two republics, and several wars. Pakistan has issued commemorative rupee pieces for institutional anniversaries with reasonable regularity, and this 2011 coin marks the college's sesquicentennial.
The institution educated a disproportionate share of Pakistan's military officer class, which likely explains the State Bank's willingness to issue currency in its honor.
