Additional information

The "WFC" suffix identifies this as the World Fisheries Conference commemorative, issued to coincide with the FAO-organized event held in Rome in 1984. Fishing has historically been the backbone of the Maldivian economy, and the Maldives Monetary Authority used the occasion to issue one of its larger copper-nickel pieces of the decade. Collector demand was modest at issue and has remained so — these were produced for international distribution rather than domestic circulation, and most surviving examples show little to no wear.
