Nesvizh Castle served as the primary seat of the Radziwiłł family for nearly four centuries — one of the most powerful magnate dynasties in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The castle was seized and looted repeatedly, by Swedish forces during the Northern Wars, by Napoleon's army in 1812, and finally stripped of its remaining treasures by Soviet authorities after World War II. Belarus launched its architectural heritage coin series in the early 2000s partly as a deliberate nation-building exercise, asserting ownership over a history shared — and contested — with Poland and Lithuania.
UNESCO inscribed Nesvizh on the World Heritage List in 2005, one year after this coin's issue date.
