The Slutsk belts — słuckie pasy — were ornate silk and gold-thread sashes produced in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the early eighteenth century onward, with the most prized examples coming from the Slutsk manufactory established around 1758 under Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł. They functioned as markers of szlachta nobility, worn doubled or quadrupled at the waist over a kontusz. By the partitions of the Commonwealth, they had become so culturally loaded that their suppression under Russian imperial rule turned them into symbols of lost statehood. Fewer than 200 authenticated originals survive globally.
