Issued as part of Belarus's ongoing architectural heritage series launched after independence, this coin commemorates the fortified Orthodox church at Synkovichy — one of the oldest surviving Gothic defensive churches in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, built in the late 15th century. The structure served simultaneously as a place of worship and a military strongpoint, with corner towers designed to repel raids from Teutonic and Tatar forces alike.
The National Bank of Belarus began issuing collector silver in 1996, and the architectural series quickly became its most consistent numismatic program. Low mintages throughout the run — typically under 5,000 pieces — reflect the limited domestic collector base of the newly independent republic.
