The Svityaz' lake system in western Belarus sits near the Ukrainian and Polish borders, an area that changed hands repeatedly through the twentieth century and spent decades as Soviet administrative territory before Belarusian independence in 1991. The Svityazyansky reserve was established specifically to protect the lake's unusually transparent, oligotrophic waters — among the cleanest natural lakes in the region — along with the surrounding relict forest.
Belarus has issued nature reserve coins consistently since the early 2000s, building one of the more systematic wildlife and ecology series among post-Soviet states. KM#772 belongs to that long-running program.
