Additional information

This piece belongs to Belarus's long-running Orthodox saints series, which the National Bank has used since the early 2000s to assert cultural and religious identity in the post-Soviet space. Vladimir I — baptized around 988 AD — oversaw the Christianization of Kievan Rus by decree, reportedly after sending envoys to evaluate the faiths of neighboring powers and rejecting Islam partly on the grounds that it prohibited alcohol.

KM#499 is a collector issue; it never circulated.
