Zvanets, a village in Brest Oblast near the Polish border, was the site of a significant 1651 engagement during the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Cossack Hetmanate under Bohdan Khmelnytsky. A Tatar withdrawal from the Cossack alliance effectively handed the Commonwealth a bloodless strategic victory, halting what had been a catastrophic sequence of Polish military defeats. The battle is rarely covered in Western historiography but occupies a contested place in Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Polish national memory simultaneously.
This piece is part of Belarus's long-running "Reserve" (Запаведнікі) commemorative silver program, which has used the 38.61mm format consistently across dozens of regional and historical subjects since the early 2000s.
