Belarus issued a long-running series of Olympic preview coins in advance of the London 2012 Games, with individual sports parceled out across several years of release. Handball holds a particular place in Belarusian sporting culture — the national men's team won gold at the 2004 Athens Games, making it one of the country's most decorated Olympic sports at the time this coin was authorized.
