Belarus launched its national parks commemorative series in the early 2000s as part of a broader push to establish the young republic's cultural and environmental identity through its coinage program. Naroch, the largest lake in Belarus, anchors the park and has been a protected zone since 1999. The mute swan — a year-round resident of the Naroch basin — was hunted nearly to local extinction in the region during the Soviet period, making its recovery a point of genuine conservation significance by the time this coin was struck.
