Mogilev, one of Belarus's oldest cities, sits on the Dnieper and endured some of the heaviest fighting on the Eastern Front during World War II — the city held out in a siege for 23 days in July 1941 before German forces overwhelmed it. This coin belongs to the National Bank's long-running "Cities of Belarus" series, which documented regional urban identity through the early 2000s as the country worked to establish a distinct numismatic program following Soviet dissolution.
