Ivan Shamiakin was one of the most widely read Belarusian Soviet authors of the postwar decades, his novels circulating in millions of copies across the USSR during the 1950s through 1970s. This issue marks the centenary of his birth in 1921. Shamiakin was a rare figure in Soviet Belarusian letters — a writer who managed to address wartime trauma and rural life with enough candor to earn genuine popular readership, without fatally antagonizing censors.
