The Internal Troops of Belarus trace their institutional lineage to Soviet interior security forces, reorganized under Belarusian authority following independence in 1991. The centenary being marked here counts from 1918 — the founding of internal security troops under the early Soviet state, a genealogy the Belarusian government has consistently chosen to claim rather than distance itself from.
