Part of a series the National Bank of Belarus issued throughout the 2000s drawing on Russian literary and folkloric subjects, this piece takes its subject from Pushkin's 1831 verse tale The Tale of Tsar Saltan — itself adapted from oral folk tradition Pushkin collected during his years of internal exile at Mikhaylovskoye. Belarus issuing coins celebrating Russian literary heritage reflects the deep cultural entanglement between the two states, accelerated after the 1999 Union State treaty.
The .925 silver specification and 28.28g weight place it squarely in the global commemorative bullion format popularized after the 1990s collector coin boom — produced for cabinets, not pockets.
