Issued as part of Belarus's ambitious commemorative silver program launched in the late 1990s, this coin marks the 2000th anniversary of Christianity — a date the Orthodox Church calculates from the birth of Christ rather than the Gregorian calendar's reckoning. The National Bank of Belarus produced numerous religious-themed pieces during this period, partly as a cultural assertion following Soviet-era suppression of the Orthodox Church, which had seen monasteries shuttered and clergy imprisoned under Brezhnev well into the 1980s.
KM#42 is among the earlier entries in what became a lengthy commemorative silver series, with mintages for this period typically kept low for the collector market.
