Brest celebrated its millennial anniversary in 2019, though the city's actual founding date has been a subject of scholarly dispute — the year 1019 derives from a single chronicle reference in the Rus' Primary Chronicle, making it one of the earliest documented settlements in what is now Belarus. The city has been controlled at various points by Kievan Rus', the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire before its incorporation into the Soviet Union following the Brest-Litovsk Treaty of 1918.
