The Border Guard Service of Belarus traces its institutional origins to 1918, when the nascent Soviet state began organizing frontier security forces along what were then highly contested and shifting boundaries in the aftermath of the First World War and the collapse of the Russian Empire. Belarus itself had become a battleground between Bolshevik, German, and Polish forces, making border control less an administrative function than a military one. The centennial series from the National Bank has commemorated several security and state institutions in this format.
