Belavezhskaya Pushcha is one of the last and largest remnants of the primeval forest that once stretched across the European plain, and Belarus shares it — sometimes uneasily — with Poland under a UNESCO transboundary designation formalized in 1992. The Belarusian side is also where the Białowieża Accords were signed in December 1991, effectively dissolving the Soviet Union. The forest lends its name to both a nature reserve and a political rupture that redrew the map of the twentieth century.
