Belarus established its independent financial system following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with the National Bank founded in 1991. The 1999 date marks eighty years from 1919, when the short-lived Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic first stood up rudimentary monetary institutions under Bolshevik reorganization — institutions that were almost immediately absorbed into the USSR's centralized banking apparatus and remained so for seven decades.
