Issued to coincide with Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup — the first tournament held in the Middle East and the first played in November-December rather than the traditional summer schedule, a concession to the Gulf state's extreme heat. Qatar's Central Bank authorized a series of collector issues around the event, this being among the gold pieces.
The .9999 fine gold specification places it at four-nines purity, a step above the more common .999 standard used by most sovereign mints for bullion issues.
