Obverse description At right, the national emblem of Brunei — adopted in 1940 and comprising the royal parasol, wings, crescent, and clasped hands — serves as the central heraldic device. At centre, a vignette of the Tapak Kuda Laut flower (Ipomoea pes-caprae), a pantropical creeping vine symbolising the enduring nature of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement. At left, a portrait of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei, who ascended the throne on 5 October 1967 following his father's abdication.
