| 背面描述 | At center, a shield-shaped emblem depicting a raised fist grasping a stylized motif symbolizing the Sacred Defense (Iran-Iraq War), flanked by the Solar Hijri dates '١٣٥٩' and '١٣٦٧' below, marking the beginning and end of the war. An Arabic inscription referencing the Sacred Defense appears above the shield. The entire design is enclosed within an ornate chain-link wreath border that runs around the full periphery of the reverse field. |

Issued the year the Iran-Iraq War formally ended with UN Resolution 598, this coin takes its name from the Islamic Republic's official designation for that conflict — "Sacred Defense" (Defa-e Moghaddas) — a framing that positioned the eight-year war as a religious obligation rather than a geopolitical one. The war had cost Iran an estimated 200,000–500,000 military dead and left the economy in ruins, making the coin's commemorative optimism something of a hard sell in daily circulation.
Khomeini accepted the ceasefire in July 1988, famously describing it as "drinking poison."
