| Obverse description | Central field displays the national emblem of Oman — two crossed khanjar daggers overlaid on two crossed swords — rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. An inner beaded border encloses the emblem, flanked by the denomination '20 RIALS' in Latin characters to the left and '٢٠ ريال' in Arabic to the right. The legend 'SULTANATE OF OMAN' appears along the lower inner border in Latin script, while the upper arc carries the Arabic legend 'البنك المركزي العُماني' (Central Bank of Oman) and 'سلطنة عُمان' (Sultanate of Oman). Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession, which followed his overthrow of his father Said bin Taimur in a July 1970 palace coup backed by British military and intelligence support. Qaboos had been kept under house arrest by his father for years prior. The 1970 coup ended a period of deliberate medieval-style isolation that had left Oman with only three schools and fewer than ten kilometers of paved road in the entire country.
The .916 fineness matches traditional 22-karat coin gold, favored by Gulf states for commemorative issues of this period.
