By 1978, the Iranian economy was fracturing under the weight of revolutionary pressure — strikes had paralyzed the oil sector, and the banking system was functioning in name only. Coins dated to this final year of Pahlavi rule were minted but saw almost no meaningful circulation before the February 1979 revolution swept the monarchy away entirely. The issuing authority named on this piece, Bank Markazi Iran, was reorganized under the new Islamic Republic and stripped of its pre-revolutionary identity almost immediately after the Shah's departure in January 1979.
