Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, this piece was struck just one year before the Islamic Revolution ended Pahlavi rule entirely. The FAO program, which ran globally through the 1970s, encouraged member nations to issue coins promoting agricultural development and food security — Iran's participation reflected the Shah's broader modernization drive known as the White Revolution, which had included sweeping land redistribution policies beginning in 1963.
The timing makes survivors of this issue historically pointed. Coins dated 1978 from the final Pahlavi issues saw minimal circulation as the revolutionary upheaval of 1978–79 disrupted normal commerce.
