20 Rials Albakiriah Mosque

Issued to mark the restoration of the Al-Bakiriyah Mosque in Sana'a, a Ottoman-era structure built in 1597 under the command of the Ottoman governor Hassan Pasha. The mosque survived Yemen's 1962 republican revolution largely intact, though the surrounding city changed irreversibly. This coin was part of a limited commemorative gold series produced for the Yemen Arab Republic during a period when the north was consolidating its identity against the Soviet-backed south.
