Brazil's shift toward base-metal coinage in the late 1860s involved a series of pattern and trial strikes as the imperial government evaluated alternatives to the copper issues that had long dominated small-denomination circulation. This nickel trial of 1869 was part of that exploratory phase — nickel was being tested by several Latin American mints simultaneously, driven largely by cost and durability arguments coming out of post-Civil War American minting experience with the metal.
No nickel coinage entered regular Brazilian production at this denomination following these trials. The decision went back to bronze.
